The NHS is a foundation to build your working life around. If I can stay in the occupation for a long time, I will be happy.

I think, every now and again, a small thank you goes a long way.

I see us all as a big team. From cleaners to us, every single person in the Trust.

There are still some parents who are sceptical of vaccinations, but there’s no need to be really.

My Christmas wish is for our NHS to go from strength to strength.

And especially with young people, I find myself being really ‘street’. It’s quite embarrassing!

I’ve got some really fond memories of when people really appreciate the hard work that I put in and say so.

The NHS always needs to be celebrated at Christmas.

Even if you’re really stressed, you still have those patients who are so grateful and it just makes you feel really happy and it makes you feel that what you are doing is really worthwhile.

I find senior doctors and their attitudes inspiring. I think one of the best things as a doctor is that you are in a really privileged position, so patients will tell you things that no one else knows.

As he walked out, he shouted out, ‘You fat cow!’

I managed to talk to him, calm him down and get the axe off him.

Sometimes an operation is like doing quite a satisfying jigsaw. It’s just a bit different from everything else!

I'm quite conscientious and I always say to the girls I work with that if a job's worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

That human touch bit... I pray that never goes.

When people ask me if I remember past patients, one young man always comes to mind. He died following complications after an elective operation I performed, and he left behind a wife and young child.

She was just great; she had a really good personality. She died quite suddenly and it was hard on everyone.

It’s hard, but try not to get upset and try to stay in your role as much as you can.

I had cancer two years ago and one patient had cancer around the same time as me.

You don’t want to call them your favourite patients, but there are some patients who get to you.

Up to ⅓ of cancers would be preventable if people lost weight and ate a healthy diet.

Very often we’re short-staffed and the finances aren't what we want. But we try our best in the situation that we’ve got.

I enjoy all of it. I think it is a privilege to work with people and look after them when they're in need.

He just wanted a hug; he just wanted to be held after he’d lost his wife.

There was a palpable sense of sadness when he came in.

‘Look at the map and choose a place you'd like to go on holiday.’

Nothing was ever too much trouble for her. She was always there for everybody.

We held her hand through all of it. We’d given her so much support.

Our patients aren’t well. They come to us and they’re poorly and what we do is just support and guide them through whatever they’re going through.

But after I’d finished my shift, I went in there and said goodnight to the patient who had just passed away.

I think that’s a really big part of our job... to support the whole family.

The patients are very aware that I’m pregnant,

You can learn the skills to be a nurse, but you can’t learn the values.

We transferred him to the Intensive Treatment Unit and they got married in the hospital.

The remorse and reflection surrounding their actions was often very tragic, and it was challenging to try and help them repair and forgive themselves.

It was nice for her to see me become Sister before she passed. She was really proud.

This is my mum's favourite flower.

We just need to be compassionate to each other.

She said in the end she just laughed because she lay under the stars and thought about all of their memories together.

The look on her face when she was dying… I felt like they looked at each other and they remembered 60 years of their life together.

As a doctor, you have to develop a certain degree of detachment because otherwise it will follow you everywhere and it will dominate your life.

When I was young, the body was more what it could do for me and then as the body started to go a little bit wrong, I learnt that I actually have to look after my body...

My job is about connection. It’s about storytelling and it’s about healing and health promotion and being good.

The key to my health is to be part of functioning teams.

As a nurse you don’t always get that time and I’m passionate about helping people through their journey of cancer.
